- Newsreader instructions:
- -------------------------
-
- The newsreader is pretty simple to use:
-
- When starting up, it will ask you for the name of your NNTP (news)
- server and SMTP (mail) server. Next, it will get a list of all groups
- from the server and put them in a window named "Newsgroups". This
- master group list is always resident (although it can be hidden). The
- reader allows browsing of the groups from this list, but does not keep
- track of read/unread articles and subscribed groups.
-
- To start a new reading session (sort of like creating a newsrc file),
- choose "New Group Window" from the file menu (Comm-N). To subscribe to
- a group, select one or more groups from the "Newsgroups" window. Now,
- click on the selected group(s) and drag and drop them into the new user
- group window (or select "Subscribe" from the "News" menu). To
- unsubscribe, select the groups from the user group window and select
- "Unsubscribe" from the "News" menu.
-
- Now that you have a group list, you can browse through the groups just
- like you expect (double-click on groups or subjects). Bold groups
- indicate that the group has unread messages. You can use the "Mark
- Read/Unread" commands to mark groups or articles.
-
- User group lists can then be saved to the local hard drive. If you want
- to continue reading news on both the Mac and a remote UNIX newsreader
- (i.e. rn), you can choose "Send/Get Group List From Net" to retrieve
- your personal ".newsrc" file from a UNIX account.
-
- Finally, searching is possible by selecting a range of groups and
- selecting "Search...". You can then select the header you want to
- search in and what you want to search for in that header. (Ex: select
- comp.sys.mac.hardware, enter Subject from the pop-up menu, and type
- "macrecorder" in the content (this probably won't get you anything...).
- Any groups with matches will appear in a new user groups window (which
- you can save).
-
- Other features are obvious Mac things (printing, saving articles,
- etc...).
